Transcription - (Vancouver BC) - Interviews and Focus Groups
Monday, 17 March 2008
We are a Vancouver-based transcription firm specializing in the transcription of academic research interviews and focus groups. We currently have an opening for a dicta-typist to work from home on contract transcribing digital audio files via the internet. You can choose to work anywhere from 16 to 40 hours per week. You choose the number of hours and times you wish to work, which can be days, evenings and/or weekends. However, you must be able to work a minimum of 4 hours a day for 2 consecutive days at least twice a week. If you want more hours, you can work as many days during the week and/or weekend that you like. However, you should not plan to work more than a maximum of about 6 hours per day, because transcription is very demanding, both physically and mentally and you'll need to take breaks. Although the workflow can fluctuate slightly at any given time, it's generally very steady all year, with the exception of March and September. It's a little bit quieter in March and September because most of our work is academic research, so in March our clients are taking time off for Spring Break and in September they are getting organized for the school year. You must type 65+ wpm and be expert in MS Word, the internet & email. You must have Word 2000 or later, high-speed internet and an IBM compatible computer, not a Mac, because the software required to do the transcription will not run on a Mac. Experience using Express Scribe digital audio transcription software and transcribing interviews or focus groups is helpful but not essential. English must be your native language and you must have excellent English, spelling and grammar. You must be very well-read, with a broad eclectic knowledge in a wide variety of areas, as the topics we get for transcription are wide and varied. A BA in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, English Literature or History is helpful, but not essential. We pay by the number of characters with spaces, on a sliding scale according to difficulty, but if you type 80 wpm you should earn about $20/hr. We only ask that you currently type a minimum of 65+ wpm because your speed should come up very quickly once you start doing transcription on a regular basis. Please attach your resume and telephone number, together with your dicta-typing experience, number of days you wish to work, time of day you wish to work, and how this position will fit into your current and future plans. As noted above, you must be able to work a minimum of 4 hours a day for 2 consecutive days at least twice a week. If you want more hours, you can work as many days during the week and/or weekend that you like, but you should not plan to work more than a maximum of about 6 hours per day because transcription is very demanding, both physically and mentally and you'll need to take breaks. Please note that we will not respond to requests for information without a resume and contact information.
